Mermaids have always lived in that wonderful space between myth and “trust me, I saw it” — and in the 18th and 19th centuries they were genuine crowd-pullers at fairs and travelling exhibitions. This 1817 illustration of mermaids “exhibited successively in the years 1758, 1775 and 1794” captures that vintage curiosity-cabinet spirit perfectly: part folklore, part theatrical spectacle, and ideal for a gallery wall of gothic oddities, maritime history and Victorian-style wonders.
This is an edited reproduction made from antique/public domain source imagery.
